Spanish officials have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel after Gran Canaria was hit by raging flooding.

Cars were left stranded on flooded streets and vehicles were swept into the sea by rising floodwaters on the island.

Now the Spanish meteorological agency has issued a yellow alert for the Canary Islands.
