There are two new homes in the East Central neighborhood where two families are getting ready to start a new chapter of their lives.

With keys in hand, the Thomas family thanked Habitat for Humanity for a house they never thought they'd be able to afford.

"Really excited to be able to move in soon," said Nathan Thomas. "We're living with my parents. Their houses are not exactly a duplex but we have a downstairs, but since I've been put in a wheelchair, it just doesn't quite fit."

Nathan Thomas was a military veteran before getting involved with Habitat for Humanity. With help from the organization and some amazing volunteers. Nathan, his wife Jessica, and their children have a new, accessible, and fire-resistant home.

"There was a home that was there. It burned down. Somebody lost their life," said Michelle Girardot, CEO of Habitat for Humanity.

The victim's family donated the home to Habitat, which turned it into two low-cost and low-carbon concrete homes, one of which Nathan and his family will move into.

On Friday, the two families got a glimpse inside.

"I'll be able to go in and cook and be able to do stuff that I haven't been able to do in years," Thomas said. "I think anyone that's walked in has gotten a tour from them about how everything's going to go and where everything's been put."

In June, the homeowners will be all moved in, ready to be a part of their new neighborhood.
